South Berkeley Community Church History Project
South Berkeley Community Church (SBCC) has a distinguished and glorious history, from the heights of grand aspirations for God's Kingdom on earth right here in Berkeley, to the lows of bitter infighting and the severing of community. South Berkeley Community Church was founded in 1943 as an intentionally racially integrated church. From its inception it played an an important role in the civil rights movement in Berkeley and the surrounding areas. Read A Long Stride Forward for the story of the church's first twenty years.

The church served as a community center as you can see in the pictures of Mrs. Claiborne's millinery (hatmaking) class, Mrs. Johnston's ballet class, and the well baby clinic.
